All the recipes that you will find here on the Tapestry of Our Lives website are Trim Healthy Mama compliant. Trim Healthy Mama (or THM) is a healthy way of eating that focuses on not spiking your blood sugar levels by eating in a low glycemic way. For those who want to lose weight or want to have more energy and generally feel better, THM has worked for literally thousands of woman and their families to achieve a healthy lifestyle. THM was created by two sisters, Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison in 2012, and they released a wonderful book that explains the eating plan way better than I ever could.
The book they wrote in 2012 is called Trim Healthy Mama and you can can buy it here. This is a huge book that delves into the different eating styles of people and how they can eat better. It is a very conversational book with playful banter between the sisters and also includes a great number of recipes. Pearl and Serene did extensive research that focuses on the science behind it all. There is also a lot of trial and error that they went through before they honed in on this plan. They tested and tweaked until they got it right. They found a great way that we could eat all the healthy food groups without having to deprive ourselves of any of them.
I could go on and on about this great way of eating, but really, the information is so well explained in their books, and if you need any more convincing, be sure to check out the incredible number of glowing reviews of the individuals who are so happy to have discovered this plan and how it has changed their lives. If you can only get one of their books, I recommend this one because it has a very thorough explanation of the plan and plenty of recipes to get you started.
If you can purchase more than one of their books, the sisters came out with two separate ones in 2015. One is a more concise and faster read than the original that explains how the plan works. It is called Trim Healthy Mama Plan Book and you can purchase it here. The other book that they released at the same time as the plan book is a beautiful, full-color cookbook that boasts over 350 great recipes. This is called Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook: Eat Up and Slim Down with More than 350 Healthy Recipes and can be found here. These two books really make this way of eating more simple and easier to implement to your lifestyle. Just recently, the sisters released a brand-new cookbook which you can buy here.
This newest book is my favorite of theirs to date. It is chock full of amazing new recipes. So far, I have been able to try a few and I have not been disappointed. It also features a great little section at the beginning that explains the plan that makes it so easy to understand. It is great if you have been a bit confused or are just needing a refresher.
I won’t go into great detail about the eating plan here but my recipes will include letter codes that show what kind of meal or snack that they fit into. An ‘S’ means that the recipe is ‘satisfying,’ meaning it contains healthy fats with a protein and is low in carbohydrates. An ‘E’ recipe, which stands for ‘energizing,’ includes healthy carbohydrates with a protein and is low in fat. The idea is that your body can only burn one type of fuel at a time and most meals in an American diet include both fats and often unhealthy carbs that your body has a hard time burning through, and unless you have a fast metabolism, those mix of fuels are going to turn into fat. If you consume only one fuel source, your body can burn that fuel efficiently and then can burn through some fat stores. There is one more meal or snack that is both low in fat and also low in carbs. It is considered a fuel pull, or FP. You are pulling out both fuel types from your meal and your body can focus on just burning your fat stores.
As you can tell, I’m very excited about this way of eating. I’ve been on countless other diets that have been quite unhealthy and have reeked havoc on my metabolism.
